A las armas nucleares las cargan los bancos

La industria mundial de las armas nucleares es financiada y mantenida viva por más de 300 bancos, fondos de pensión, compañías de seguros y gestores de activos, según un nuevo estudio. Esas instituciones realizan sustanciales inversiones en la fabricación de armas atómicas. 

 

 

Divulgado por la Campaña Internacional para Abolir las Armas Nucleares (ICAN, por sus siglas en inglés), el estudio de 180 páginas señala que las naciones con poderío nuclear gastan más de 100.000 millones de dólares al año fabricando nuevas ojivas, modernizando las viejas y construyendo misiles balísticos, bombarderos y submarinos para lanzarlas. 

Gran parte de este trabajo es realizado por corporaciones como BAE Systems y Babcock International en Gran Bretaña, Lockheed Martin y Northrop Grumman en Estados Unidos, Thales y Safran en France, y Larsen & Toubro en India. 

"Instituciones financieras invierten en esas compañías proveyendo préstamos y comprando acciones y bonos", indica el informe, considerado el primero en su clase. 

 

 

Titulado "Don’t Bank on the Bomb: The Global Financing of Nuclear Weapons Producers" ("No confíen en la bomba: El financiamiento mundial de los productores de armas nucleares"), el estudio provee detalles de las transacciones financieras con 20 compañías intensamente involucradas en la fabricación, mantenimiento y modernización de las fuerzas atómicas estadounidenses, británicas, francesas e indias. 

Se necesita una urgente campaña mundial coordinada por la desinversión en armas nucleares, añade. Un movimiento así podría ayudar a frenar los programas de modernización y fortalecimiento de armamentos e impulsar las negociaciones hacia una prohibición universal de ese tipo de bombas. 

 

 

 

"Dejar de invertir en las compañías de armas nucleares es una forma efectiva de que el mundo corporativo avance hacia la meta de una abolición nuclear", afirma el estudio. El trabajo llama a las instituciones financieras a que dejen de invertir en la industria armamentística atómica. 

"Cualquier uso de armas nucleares violaría el derecho internacional y tendría catastróficas consecuencias humanitarias. Al invertir en los fabricantes, las instituciones financieras están de hecho facilitando la construcción de fuerzas atómicas", indica. 

En el prólogo del informe, el arzobispo anglicano sudafricano Desmond Tutu, premio Nobel de la Paz, señala: "Nadie debería hacer ganancias con esta terrible industria de la muerte, que nos amenaza a todos". 

 

 

El líder pacifista instó a las instituciones financieras a que apoyaran los esfuerzos para eliminar la amenaza atómica, y destacó que el cese de inversiones fue vital en la campaña para poner fin al apartheid (sistema de segregación racial en perjuicio de la mayoría negra) en Sudáfrica. 

La misma táctica puede y debe ser empleada para enfrentar a la creación más maligna del hombre: la bomba nuclear, añadió. Por su parte, Tim Wright, director de campañas de ICAN y coautor del informe, dijo a IPS que algunas de las instituciones identificadas en el trabajo ya expresaron su "intención de adoptar políticas prohibiendo las inversiones en fabricantes de armas atómicas". 

 

 

La campaña para que cesen las inversiones "probablemente será más exitosa en países donde la oposición a las armas nucleares es más fuerte", por ejemplo los escandinavos y Japón, indicó. 

Destacó que cada vez más bancos reconocen que se debe aplicar algún tipo de criterio ético a las inversiones, y que apoyar la fabricación de armas capaces de destruir ciudades enteras al instante era algo claramente contrario a la ética. 

De las 322 instituciones financieras identificadas en el informe, alrededor de la mitad tienen sede en Estados Unidos y un tercio en Europa. El estudio también denuncia a instituciones de Asia, Australia y Medio Oriente. 

 

 

Las más involucradas con la industria de armas nucleares son Bank of America, BlackRock y JP Morgan Chase en Estados Unidos, BNP Paribas en Francia, Allianz y Deutsche Bank en Alemania, Mistubishi UJF Financial en Japón, BBVA y Banco Santander en España, Credit Suisse y UBS en Suiza, y Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds y Royal Bank of Scotland en Gran Bretaña. Consultado sobre si sería viable una campaña para boicotear a estas entidades, Wright dijo a IPS: "Si los bancos se resisten a ceder, los clientes tendrán que buscar alternativas éticas". 

 

 

Muchos otros bancos, particularmente pequeños, se niegan a tener cualquier tipo de vínculo con esta industria, destacó. "Si la gente comienza a irse en masa, esto enviará una poderosa señal al banco de que su apoyo a las compañías de armas nucleares es inaceptable". 

En el caso de las instituciones multinacionales, una campaña coordinada de boicot en varios países sería efectiva, sostuvo. 

El estudio también cita a Setsuko Thurlow, sobreviviente de la bomba atómica lanzada por Estados Unidos sobre la ciudad japonesa de Hiroshima en 1945, y quien hizo un llamado a invertir de una forma ética y a no contribuir con actividades que amenacen la Tierra.
